In May last year we joined forces with Emotech, the award-winning robotics startup responsible for Olly, the smart home robot to create Meet AI - the first London-based knowledge sharing platform for AI enthusiasts. Meet AI has grown tremendously over the past 9 months and we've recently hosted our 7th session!
For round 7 we got Neurotech X on board to deliver a panel discussion on the diverse aspects of machine learning and neuroscience. Neurotech X is a non-profit organization with a mission to build a strong global neurotechnology community.
Titled The Past, Present and Future of Machine Learning x Neuroscience, our Meet AI 7 session forcused on the way Neuroscience and AI, two fields closely linked, can work together as both are currently experiencing their respective Golden Ages.
Our distinguished panellists for Meet AI 7 were Grace Lindsay (PhD at the Center for Theoretical Neuroscience at Columbia University), Warrick Roseboom (Time Perception Group leader at Sackler) and Davide Valeriani (post-doctoral researcher in Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) at the University of Essex). The panel was moderated by Javier Asensio (PhD in Brain Computer Interfacting at the University of Essex).
The panellists each briefly introduced their respective area of expertise before joining a lively discussion and answering the audience’s most pressing questions.
Grace Lindsay PhD
Grace Lindsay shared insight into her research focused on modelling the neural and performance correlates of attention. She currently co-hosts Unsupervised Thinking, a podcast on neuroscience and AI.
Warrick Roseboom, PhD
Warrick gave an overview of his recent research into human perception. As Time Perception Group Leader at Sackler, he is currently working on Timestorm, a six-partner EU project aiming to equip artificial systems with human-like temporal cognition.
Davide Valeriani PhD
With his research focus on Brain-Computer Interfaces at the University of Essex, Davide shared his latest insight into non-invasive (EEG-based), multisensory (audio-visual) BCIs to improve individual and group decision making. Through machine learning he is able to assess the degree of decision confidence of individuals from their brain signals and other physiological and behavioural measures.
In an engaging discussion with the audience our researchers then investigated collaboration opportunities, recent achievements and also limitations of the symbiosis between machine learning and neuroscience.
According to our panelists, neuroscience is presently using computational methods to push the limits of what we know from the brain, retrofeeding and expanding the symbiosis between these two fields. Combining both worlds we are now able to build machines that can be controlled directly by the brain extending the capabilities of the human body and bringing the idea of cybernetic organisms to life.
In typical Meet AI fashion the audience interacted greatly and had a chance to ask their most pressing questions regarding AI. Those were not only of technical but also of moral nature regarding the dangers and opportunities of AI and for instance the very definition of 'consciousness' and if AI can have 'consciousness'. Warrick Roseboom noted how 'vague' and 'open for interpretation' such terms are and how the advancement of AI will see us redefining a lot of the vocabulary we use.
Meet AI 7 was concluded as always with a networking session and refreshments in our Cocoon Networks Eventspace.
